Marrying and Merrymaking (or Maybe Just Marrying) in Fable: A Guide for the Discerning Hero
So, you’re wandering around Albion. You’re slaying balverines and charming villagers. Suddenly, it hits you: “I need a spouse!” You’re in luck. Fable lets you marry a few folks. Who are the eligible bachelors and bachelorettes? And what’s the deal with Lady Grey? Let’s dive in!
Lady Grey: Albion’s Most Eligible (and Slightly Shady) Bachelorette
Ah, Lady Grey. Her name sounds like a historical drama. If you like real-world history, there’s a Lady Jane Grey. She had an eventful time. But in Fable, Lady Grey is the NPC you can propose to in style.
Catching Lady Grey’s Eye (and Ring)
First, you can’t just stroll up to her and propose. You need a process. Get involved in investigating the Mayor to get on her radar. Eventually, you’ll duel Thunder. Yes, Thunder. For a lady. High stakes await!
Roses, Rings, and Royalties (Well, Dowries)
If you impress Lady Grey to reach ‘courting’, she’ll test you. Forget chocolates; she demands a gift. A plain posy won’t do. You must head to Bowerstone shopkeeper’s shop. It’s conveniently located between upstairs pathways. Get a black rose. Yes, black.
Present the black rose to Lady Grey. If she thinks you’re worthy, wedding bells might ring. What are the perks? Marrying Lady Grey offers a hefty dowry of 15,000 gold! That’s 15,000 shiny coins! Suddenly, dueling Thunder seems worthwhile, right?
The Grey Family Perks (and Quirks)
Marrying Lady Grey isn’t all roses and gold. There are… consequences. Lady Grey is moody. If your hero isn’t winning beauty contests or if you embrace villainy too eagerly, she might express her marital bliss uniquely. Expect mood swings from screaming to sudden love declarations.
But there’s an upside! Marrying into the Grey family grants you access to the Grey House Demon Door. This door is picky; only family members can enter. If you’re a completionist, marrying Lady Grey is a must for your quests.
Exposing Lady Grey: The Road Not Taken (Unless You Hate Demon Doors)
What if you’re not keen on someone with a questionable reputation? You have options! You can refuse Lady Grey’s proposal. Dramatic, I know. If you go this way, she vanishes quickly from the game. But do not worry! You can expose her!
Talk to the captain of guards in Bowerstone North. You can share your info, become the Mayor, and enjoy civic glory. But, there’s a trade-off. Remember the Grey Manor Demon Door? Exposing Lady Grey means you lose access to it forever. Choose wisely: marriage and Demon Door access, or mayoral power?
Beyond Lady Grey: A Plethora of Partners (and Maybe a Few Too Many)
While Lady Grey is the headline act of Fable marriages, she’s not the only option in Albion’s sea. You can marry a surprising number of NPCs. Good wives, bad wives, even guild apprentices! Fable offers choices in matters of the heart.
Multiple Spouses: Albion’s Polygamy Paradise?
Here’s where it gets interesting. In Fable, monogamy is optional! You can have multiple spouses! You may have one spouse for each marital home you own. You can own up to five homes. Do the math! Five spouses! Imagine the holiday gatherings.
Whisper: The Un-Marriageable Wonder (and Possible Foe)
If you like mysterious Whisper, I have bad news. Despite her intriguing nature and combat skills, you cannot marry her in any Fable game. Sorry to Whisper fans! However, you must make a significant choice about her: kill her or let her live.
Killing her earns you 10,000 gold – tempting for a mercenary hero. Letting her live leads her back to her homeland in the South Islands, according to the Snowspire Oracle. That’s closure if you enjoy being a merciful hero. More info can be found in this walkthrough.
Kids? Not in This Albion (Officially)
You may think, “Okay, multiple spouses are wild. But what about kids?” The answer is… complicated. There were intentions to include children in Fable. There’s dialogue hiding in game files! But it never made it into Fable, The Lost Chapters, or Anniversary.
Rumors speak of glitches and failed features. For instance, marrying Lady Grey, moving to Fairfax Castle,*then* having a child was supposed to trigger ‘Family trails’ in a Rescue quest. Alas, all trails lead to a wall in Fairfax Gardens. A metaphorical wall? Or just a bug?
This is marriage in Fable: rewarding, quirky, and polygamous. Whether you want political power with Lady Grey or a spouse (or five) for your homes, Albion delivers intriguing romantic options. Just don’t expect little Fablelings running around anytime soon.
