Gwen faces balance issues in League of Legends due to multiple adjustments made to her abilities and statistics over various patches. For instance, her AP ratio has fluctuated, with changes such as the increase from 0.65% to 0.72% per 100 AP, and then a subsequent reduction back to 0.65%. Additionally, her base health and health growth have been altered, impacting her survivability in-game. These constant adjustments reflect the challenges in balancing her unique mechanics, particularly her Hallowed Mist, which grants untargetability and increased resistances, making her difficult to counter.
Another significant aspect contributing to Gwen’s balance issues is her unique damage mechanics. For example, her Thousand Cuts passive allows her basic attacks to deal bonus magic damage based on a percentage of the target’s maximum health, which can be extremely effective against tanky champions. Gwen has proven to be exceptionally strong as of late and is due for a meaningful nerf. Her power curve is steeper than we’d like overall, so we don’t want to weaken her early laning phase; however, we want to make sure she’s not quite so dominant late. We’d also like to nudge her builds a bit more toward skirmisher (Riftmaker, Cosmic Drive) and less toward burst mage (Shadowflame, Deathcap), which is why we’re targeting AP ratios.
Additionally, she performs strongest at 40+ minutes with a 54.82% win rate and weakest at 0-25 minutes with a 49.8% win rate. The Durability Patch was an indirect buff for Gwen because she has max%hp magic damage and true damage.
It is important to note that Gwen doesn’t suck. She is just so balanced she can’t keep up with all the OP champions. The game is all relative; she’s good if you can bully people with her but bad if she gets bullied back. Best bet is to pray for ganks and snip snip at their balls…
