What is Gyaradosite and its Role in Pokémon?

Gyarados Overview:

Gyarados is a dual-type Water/Flying Pokémon. It evolves from Magikarp starting at level 20. Gyarados has a Nuclear-type variant.

Gyaradosite:

  • Gyaradosite is a type of held item introduced in Generation VI. It is the Mega Stone that allows Gyarados to Mega Evolve into Mega Gyarados.
  • If held by a Gyarados (or is present in the player’s Bag), it allows it to Mega Evolve into Mega Gyarados if its Trainer has a Key Stone. Each Trainer can only Mega Evolve one Pokémon per battle.
  • Outside of battle, if held by a Gyarados, it allows it to Mega Evolve into Mega Gyarados when it performs a Spectacular Talent during a Pokémon Contest Spectacular while its Trainer has a Key Stone. Gyarados will remain a Mega Gyarados until the Talent Round ends.
  • It is one of a variety of mysterious Mega Stones that enable dramatic transformations.

  • Mega Gyarados is bulkier than its previous form. The fins on its face, its barbels, and its crest are considerably longer. A large spike extends downward underneath its chin, and it has a black underside. The yellow spots along its body are replaced by raised red scales that run down its side with a single red stripe below them.
  • The Gyaradosite enables Mega Gyarados, which is a Water type that erases Pokémon on a randomized jagged line vertically, actually erasing two random jagged lines vertically that may cross.

Obtaining Gyaradosite:

  • You can obtain Gyarados’ Mega Stone (Gyaradosite) by interacting with a Poochyena inside a fishing shack on Route 123. To begin this quest, you need to talk with Lorelei, who will give you a ticket to participate in the Misty…

In the Pokémon Series:

  • In Pokémon the Series: XY, Alain discovered an uncut Gyaradosite in Mega Evolution Special I.
  • A Gyaradosite physically debuted in ‘Coming Apart at the Dreams!’, worn by Lysandre’s Shiny Gyarados around its neck in a holder similar to the one Alain’s Charizard keeps its Charizardite X in.

Evolution Trigger in Pokémon GO:

  • To Mega Evolve Gyarados into Mega Gyarados, you need to have the required amount of Gyarados Mega Energy. Go to the Gyarados that you want to transform and press on the pink button that says ‘Mega Evolve.’ This will trigger a transformation animation, allowing you to obtain Mega Gyarados.

Mythological Inspiration:

The concept of Magikarp evolving into Gyarados is based on the Chinese mythological tale of the carps leaping over the Dragon Gate. According to the legend, carps that leap over a legendary waterfall called the Dragon Gate are rewarded for their perseverance and transformed into dragons.

How to Obtain Gyaradosite in Different Pokémon Games?

To obtain Gyaradosite in different Pokémon games, follow these methods:

  • Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire: You can get Gyarados’ Mega Stone (Gyaradosite) by interacting with a Poochyena inside a fishing shack on Route 123. This location is accessible when you enter Route 123 through its northeast entrance from Route 122. Inside the shack, talk to the Poochyena, and it will ask if you want to scratch it. Say yes, and you’ll receive the Gyaradosite.
  • Event Rotation: The player can also obtain the Gyaradosite by completing the competitive stage available in Week 9 of the event rotation. Additionally, the Gyaradosite was offered as a prize during the Mega Gyarados competitive stage.

Gyarados and Mega Gyarados: Understanding the Evolution Mechanics

Gyarados Evolution Mechanics:

  • Gyarados is a Water/Flying type Pokémon introduced in Generation 1.
  • It evolves from Magikarp starting at level 20.
  • Like Magikarp, Gyarados embodies a popular motif in Chinese mythology: according to legend, a carp that leaps over the Dragon Gate will transform into a dragon.
  • When Magikarp evolves into Gyarados, its brain cells undergo a structural transformation. This transformation is said to be responsible for Gyarados’s violently aggressive nature.

Mega Gyarados:

  • Gyarados has a Mega Evolution, available in Generation 6 games and Pokémon Go.
  • When Mega Evolved, Gyarados’s type changes from Water/Flying to Water/Dark, resulting in a different set of weaknesses.
  • In particular, Mega Gyarados is vulnerable to electric, grass, fighting, bug, and fairy types. Consequently, stacking your team with Pokémon of those types is recommended when battling Mega Gyarados.
  • Mega Evolution places a burden on Gyarados’s body, intensifying its ferocity. It jets water from the orifices on its sides, streaking above the water surface at supersonic speed.
  • Additionally, the Mega Evolution alters its brain, leaving no other function except its destructive instinct to burn everything to cinders.

Battle Strategy: Utilizing Mega Gyarados Effectively

To effectively utilize Mega Gyarados in battles, consider the following strategy tips:

Optimal Counter Options:

  • Powerful Electric, Grass, Fighting, Bug, and Fairy types are the best counters.
  • Best Mega Gyarados Counters include:
    1. Sceptile (Mega) – Fury Cutter Bug, Frenzy Plant Grass
    2. Heracross (Mega) – Counter Fighting, Megahorn Bug
    3. Gardevoir (Mega) – Charm Fairy, Dazzling Gleam Fairy
    4. Kartana – Razor Leaf Grass, Leaf Blade Grass
    5. Terrakion – Double Kick Fighting, Sacred Sword Fighting
    6. Rayquaza (Mega) – Dragon Tail Dragon, Dragon Ascent
    7. Keldeo (Ordinary) – Low Kick Fighting, Sacred Sword Fighting
    8. Raikou (Shadow) – Thunder Shock Electric, Wild Charge Electric
    9. Xurkitree – Thunder Shock Electric, Discharge Electric
    10. Electivire (Shadow) – Thunder Shock Electric, Wild Charge Electric

Mega Gyarados Characteristics:

  • Type: Dark and Water
  • Max CP (Level 50): 5332
  • Stats:
    • Attack: 292
    • Defense: 247
    • HP: 216
  • Weak to: Grass, Electric, Fighting, Fairy, Bug
  • Strong Against: Fire, Ground, Rock, Psychic

Recommended Movesets:

  • For optimal DPS: Bite and Hydro Pump
  • Strongest Water-type attacker: Waterfall and Hydro Pump
  • For Dark-type attacker: Bite and Crunch
  • If used as a Dragon-type attacker: Dragon Tail (legacy move) with Outrage as the Charge move

Team Composition:

A full team of six Pokémon is recommended to take on Mega Gyarados. Key options include:

  • Mega Venusaur
  • Zekrom
  • Machamp
  • Other options: Mega Beedrill, Lucario, Conkeldurr, Electivire, Magnezone, Raikou, Roserade, Zapdos, Sceptile, Heracross, Togekiss, Sirfetch’d, and Tangrowth.

Strategy Tips:

  • Use Lucario, Conkeldurr, and Hawlucha as standard counters for best results.
  • Pair with a Grass-type Pokémon to limit Mega Gyarados’s damage capability.
  • The top recommended counters are Gardevoir, Sceptile, and Heracross.
  • Form a group of three players, ideally utilizing Party Play, when battling Mega Gyarados in raids.

Mega Gyarados shifts to Water/Dark from Water/Flying, which enhances its stats and resistances, improving battle performance. It is resistant to Dark, Fire, Ghost, Ice, Psychic, Steel, and Water-type attacks. Therefore, mastering an opponent’s weaknesses and counters is crucial before engaging in battle.

Comparing Gyaradosite with Other Mega Stones in Pokémon

Gyaradosite and Its Acquisition:

  • Gyaradosite is the Mega Stone used for Gyarados.
  • It can be obtained by interacting with a Poochyena inside a fishing shack on Route 123.
  • To access this shack, enter Route 123 through the northeast entrance from Route 122.
  • Prerequisites include obtaining at least the sixth Gym Badge from Winona, having access to Route 120, and possessing a Pokémon with HM01 Cut and HM03 Surf.
  • An alternative route involves starting from Route 121 and using Surf on Route 122, navigating through various ledges and trees to reach the fishing shack.
  • In Pokémon Omega Ruby/Alpha Sapphire, Gyaradosite allows Gyarados to Mega Evolve into Mega Gyarados during a Spectacular Talent in a Pokémon Contest.
  • However, it can only be acquired post-game, and you cannot steal Mega Stones; trading is the only other option.

Comparison with Other Mega Stones:

  • Other Mega Stones have unique locations and are associated with different Pokémon:
  • Blastoisenite for Blastoise can be found on the deck of the S.S. Tidal.
  • Gengarite for Gengar is located in a small house on the beach at the Battle Resort.

Each Mega Stone enhances specific Pokémon’s abilities during battles, providing variety in gameplay strategies.
