Cracking the Code: Unlocking Mewtwo and More in Super Smash Bros. Games

On a quest to unlock Mewtwo in Super Smash Flash 2 (SSF2)? We understand. Mewtwo, the powerful Pokémon, is a must-have for any roster. You search for secret combos, the ultimate cheat code. However, intel on SSF2 is not revealed easily.

Let’s discuss how to unlock Mewtwo in SSF2. The official word states: “In Super Smash Flash 2, all characters added after beta 1.0 will be unlockable in full SSF2.” This suggests unlockable characters exist after Beta 1.0. However, no direct method for Mewtwo is available. Consider it a vague map for treasure.

No need to despair! While SSF2’s Mewtwo unlock remains unclear, the Super Smash Bros. universe is full of characters. Learning how to unlock Mewtwo in Nintendo’s Smash Bros. games can help, or at least satisfy your desire for powerful characters. Power in Smash is key (except for Ganondorf, but more on that later).

Let’s explore Smash Bros. unlockables, starting with Super Smash Bros. Melee, a game close to many competitive gamers.

Mewtwo Mania in Melee: Hours or Hundreds of Battles? Your Choice.

Ah, Melee. The classic GameCube title. This is the game that initiated so many wavedashes. Mewtwo is indeed unlockable. Forget complex side quests; Melee presents two clear, time-consuming paths to unlock him.

Option 1: The Time Commitment Tactic. If you’re patient, enjoy button-mashing Versus matches, this method is for you. To unlock Mewtwo by time, accumulate 20 hours in Versus Mode. Before you panic, note this: more players means quicker time reduction. Here’s the breakdown:

  • 1 Player: 20 hours – A true endurance challenge.
  • 2 Players: 10 hours – Half the time. Grab a friend!
  • 3 Players: 6 hours and 40 minutes – Close, make it a party!
  • 4 Players: 5 hours – Unlocking Mewtwo becomes fun.

Gather friends, order pizza, and turn Mewtwo’s unlock into a social gathering. Think of it as a training montage with more fun and less music.

Option 2: The Battle-Hardened Brawler’s Route. Prefer dominating through battles? This path requires sheer will and button skills. To unlock Mewtwo this way, complete 700 Versus matches. Yes, seven hundred. This is not a sprint but a marathon across Battlefield and Final Destination.

Choose wisely, young Padawan. Whether through slow playtime accumulation or intense battles, Mewtwo in Melee can be yours. Prepare for a commitment, and stock up on snacks!

Ultimate Unlock: Mewtwo’s Modern Methods in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

Fast forward to the Nintendo Switch era, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate promises “Everyone is Here!” (Except Waluigi, unfortunately). Unlocking characters in Ultimate is easier than in Melee. Mewtwo is no exception. Here are options to add him to your roster.

Classic Mode Conquest. For single-player fans, Classic Mode is the path to Mewtwo. Strategy: pick Fox. Why? In Ultimate, characters unlock through trees. Fox leads to Mewtwo’s unlock tree. Clear Classic Mode with Fox, and Mewtwo appears as a challenger. Defeat him to earn your new fighter!

VS. Match Mayhem. Classic Mode not appealing? Prefer VS matches? Ultimate allows unlocking characters just by playing these matches. Keep battling until challengers arrive. Mewtwo is the 60th character to appear. Sixty sounds like many, but matches fly in Ultimate, especially when enjoying the game.

World of Light Wanderer. For adventurers, Ultimate’s World of Light offers another route to Mewtwo. Explore the vast map and unlock many fighters. Mewtwo is among them. Keep exploring, liberate spirits, and he will join your party.

In Ultimate, unlocking Mewtwo requires less grinding and feels more natural. Whether you love single-player or multiplayer chaos, he will join your roster soon. Just keep smashing!

Beyond Mewtwo: A Smorgasbord of Smash Bros. Unlockables

Mewtwo is just a glimpse into unlockable characters in the Smash world. Let’s hurry through other notable unlockables across different Smash games and showcase variety and quirky methods involved.

Super Sonic Speed in Super Smash Flash. Sticking to the Flash theme, Super Sonic is unlockable in the original Super Smash Flash. How? Complete Classic mode with Sonic without using continues. No continues? That’s old-school arcade difficulty! But for Super Sonic speed, the challenge may be worth it.

Zero Suit Samus in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Samus Aran’s Zero Suit is unlockable in Ultimate. Again, you have options: Clear Classic Mode twice as Fox (or anyone he unlocks). Fox is key to unlock many characters! Alternatively, in VS matches, she is the 19th unlockable character. You can also recruit her in World of Light.

Luigi, the Eternal Understudy (Sometimes) in Smash. Mario’s green brother has various unlock requirements over time. In Ultimate, Luigi is the 33rd VS match unlock. Unlock him by clearing Classic Mode five times as Mario or just once as Ike. Talk about favoritism! But Melee‘s Luigi unlock is famous for its strangeness. You could play 800 VS matches! Or attempt the Adventure Mode method. Here’s the Melee Luigi challenge:

  • Play the first Adventure Mode level (Mushroom Kingdom). Seems easy enough.
  • Finish with the seconds place of the timer at “2”. Examples: 22 seconds, 52 seconds, etc.
  • Defeat Luigi and Peach before the timer drops below 03:00:00. Timed fights after platforming? Makes sense.
  • Finish Adventure Mode without using continues. Naturally, there’s a no-continues rule.
  • Defeat Luigi again to complete the process.

Unlocking Luigi in Melee feels less like a game and more like an art piece.

But hey, if you unlock it, you have bragging rights for life.

Ganondorf: Power and… Weakness? The King of Evil, Ganondorf, is unlockable in multiple Smash games. In Ultimate, clear Classic Mode four times as Yoshi, or play 80 Smash mode matches. In Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS, either 80 Smash matches or beat Classic Mode as Link on Intensity 5.0 or higher to unlock him. Despite his imposing presence, Ganondorf is often considered one of the weakest characters in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. It seems unlocking him is a form of pity.

Dark Samus: Echoing Unlocks. Samus’s doppelganger, Dark Samus, is an Echo Fighter in Ultimate. You can unlock her through VS. matches as the 50th character. Classic Mode with Samus or her unlock tree will also unlock her, making her the 5th character unlocked after Incineroar. World of Light lets you recruit Dark Samus too.

Sora: The Key to… Smash? Sora from Kingdom Hearts is a newer addition to the Ultimate roster. While not exactly “unlockable” in the traditional sense (he’s DLC), his presence proves the range of characters in Smash. His fighting style reflects his Kingdom Hearts moveset. This shows dedication to character accuracy.

Mewtwo’s Pokémon Pedigree: From Clone to Combatant

Let’s take a pause from unlocking characters in Smash to explore Mewtwo’s lore. Understanding Mewtwo’s origins adds context to appreciating this psychic type.

Genesis of a Genetic Giant. Mewtwo’s backstory is complex and tragic. He wasn’t born; he was made. Specifically, by scientists as a clone of Mew, the mythical Pokémon and ancestor of all Pokémon. Think Frankenstein’s monster, but psychic with a spoon-bending ability. Mewtwo’s Battle prowess is great, but his origins stem from scientific ambition and ethical questions.

Mewtwo vs. Mew: Sibling Rivalry or Existential Angst? The relationship between Mewtwo and Mew is layered. In terms of raw power, Mewtwo usually overpowers Mew. Higher base stats, access to Mega Evolutions (Mega Mewtwo X and Y!), Mewtwo was designed for combat dominance. Mew, while balanced, can learn any move. TMs, HMs, tutor moves, level-up moves — Mew is a learning machine. Additionally, Mew is the “genetic ancestor” of all Pokémon, evolving and adapting to create the diverse Pokémon world.

Does Mewtwo hate Mew? Not really. His anger is more about his human creators. Created without purpose, Mewtwo sees Mew as a reminder of his own artificial existence, leading to rivalry and perhaps resentment. It’s less Pokémon-on-Pokémon hate and more about existential angst.

Mewtwo’s Evolution? Not Quite. Contrary to what some think, Mew does not evolve into Mewtwo. Mewtwo is a distinct clone. However, Mewtwo can Mega Evolve into Mega Mewtwo X (Psychic/Fighting-type) or Mega Mewtwo Y (pure Psychic-type). Mega Evolution exists because sometimes regular evolution isn’t enough power.

Catching Mew: Mythical Methods. Obtaining Mew often involves events and special distributions in Pokémon games. In Pokémon Fire Red, the “legitimate” method involves trading from Pokémon Emerald, where you catch Mew on Faraway Island with the Old Sea Chart, obtainable through Nintendo events. It’s a challenge! If you want a Shiny Mew, prepare for even more mythical quests. The “Mew: A Pokémon Go Masterwork Research” event allowed Shiny Mew in Pokémon Go. There’s a glitch in Pokémon Emerald that *might* lead to a Shiny Mew from Faraway Island, but this method is… let’s say “legally grey” in the Pokémon catching world.

Smash Bros. Survival Tips and Trivia Tidbits

Before wrapping up our Smash Bros. unlockables discussion, let’s share more nuggets of Smash wisdom from gaming knowledge.

SSF2: A Flashback to Melee. Remember Super Smash Flash 2? It’s worth noting that the original Super Smash Flash was based on Super Smash Bros. Melee. SSF2 serves as both a sequel and reboot, expanding on the Flash-based formula. Knowing its Melee roots might offer insights into gameplay and unlock mechanics, even if Mewtwo’s unlock remains elusive for now.

Failed Unlock? Challenger’s Approach to the Rescue! If you lost against a challenger in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, don’t panic! You haven’t missed out. Ultimate has a “Challenger’s Approach” mode in the Games & More menu. This lets you rematch any challenger you’ve failed to defeat before. Second chances in Smash? We love it!

Online Etiquette: Smash and Don’t Dash (Offline). Playing online in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate? Behave. Unsporting or inappropriate behavior can lead to temporary suspensions from online play. For example, inactivity during battles is inappropriate. Don’t go AFK mid-match if you want to stay in Nintendo’s good graces.

Shin Sonic: The Kaiju Hedgehog. Speaking of Sonic, do you know about Shin Sonic? This isn’t an unlockable character but an interesting fan creation. Shin Sonic is a city-sized, monstrous Sonic presented in a Cloverfield-style found-footage video. Imagine Godzilla but a blue hedgehog with attitude. It’s quite something.

Ganondorf: Weakest in Ultimate? Say it Ain’t So! Previously mentioned, it bears repeating: Ganondorf is often ranked as the weakest character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Tier lists are subjective, still, the consensus isn’t kind to the King of Evil in Ultimate. His power in lore might not translate well to fast-paced gameplay. Poor Ganondorf needs a buff too!

Joker: Top Tier Trickster. On another end of the tier list, Joker from Persona 5 often ranks as the strongest character in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Stylish and versatile with a powerful Persona mechanic, Joker dominates the competitive scene. From zero to hero — Phantom Thief to Smash champion.

Ultimate Flash Sonic: A 2D Spin-Off. Not to confuse with Shin Sonic, Ultimate Flash Sonic is a 2D side-scrolling Sonic fan game by Dennis-Gid. It offers a different flavor of Flash-based Sonic action for fans of side-scrolling hedgehog adventures.

Steve in Smash: Mining for Victory. Steve from Minecraft is another unexpected DLC addition to Ultimate. How do you get Steve? Unlike unlockable characters, Steve requires a purchase. As one helpful guide puts it: “Click on the box. Add to cart. If you’re done selecting, proceed to payment.” Sometimes straightforward methods are quite… commercial.

This wraps up our journey through Smash Bros. unlockables, from elusive Mewtwo in SSF2 to many characters across Nintendo titles. The SSF2 Mewtwo unlock remains a mystery for now, but keep experimenting and keep battling. Maybe you’ll discover the secret or enjoy Melee’s 700 Versus matches instead. Happy smashing!
