The Significance of Karmic Debt in Genshin’s Yakshas
The Significance of Karmic Debt in Genshin’s Yakshas
Karma, also referred to as karmic debt and divine karma, is a term which refers to the corruptive forces left behind by the wills and powers of slain ancient gods. This term is primarily used in Liyue, where the yakshas were tasked with subduing the resurging might of fallen gods. Over time, however, karma seeped into the bodies and minds of the yakshas, causing them immense suffering.
Many of those who did not fall in battle eventually succumbed to their karmic debt and went insane. Consequently, many of them died as a result of their insanity. The accumulated karmic debt took massive tolls on their minds and bodies, driving them mad. Soon enough, four out of the five original yakshas were lost to insanity and despair, leaving behind one remaining yaksha.
The yakshas were illuminated beasts who waged a never-ending war against the monsters and other manifestations of the gods’ hatred. However, this task stained them with karmic debt which wore away at their souls and sanity. Madness and despair overwhelmed the yakshas: some turned on each other, others succumbed to the darkness, and yet others vanished.
Adepti can use their form of alchemy to create a medicine called Remedium Tertiorum, which can temporarily alleviate the pain caused by karma. However, like most other adepti medicines, they are lethal to mortals. Regularly, Zhongli, Morax’s current mortal vessel, prepares medicine for Xiao in hopes of alleviating the pain incurred by his karmic debt, appearing somewhat wistful over how diligently he holds to his duty.
Vision-bearers are less affected by karma. Being in proximity to those deeply affected by it, Visions are viewed by the adepti as a ‘valid form of illumination.’ Xiao avoids interacting with the mortal realm beyond his duties to purge demons. His karmic debt can cause monsters in his vicinity to become stronger and more vicious. Simply being around him was enough to stain Paimon and the Traveler with his karmic debt, which allowed Pervases to identify him.
Furthermore, unleashing his full strength to deal with the remnants of fallen gods is incredibly destructive. Any mortal in the vicinity would be “lucky” to survive the encounter. The only way for the Yakshas to save themselves from the torment of their karmic debt is shrouded in mystery. Nonetheless, hints suggest that their struggles with this burden are deeply rooted in their purpose as protectors, yet it ultimately leads to tragedy, as seen with the fate of the original five Yakshas.
Once highly regarded as protectors of Liyue, large statues depicting the yakshas were erected across the nation. People conducted rituals involving chants and food offerings to alleviate their pain and help them continue their mission. However, as their numbers dwindled over time, the yakshas have faded into obscurity in the mortal realm.
