What Was Vanessa’s Role in Genshin Impact’s Lore?
Vennessa’s Role in Genshin Impact’s Lore
Vennessa was a hero of Mondstadt who lived around 1,000 years ago, during the era when the Mondstadt Aristocracy reigned. A “flame-touched Muratan” enslaved by the tyrannical nobles, she served as a gladiator in the Colosseum and became known as the Lionfang Knight for her undefeated streak. Despite despairing over the futility of her situation, she refused to give up, striking down hilichurls under Ursa’s command and fighting Ursa itself. Before it could retaliate, Barbatos appeared in angelic form, bolstering Vennessa’s combat abilities and helping her drive Ursa away.
With the help of Barbatos and Ragnvindr, among others, Vennessa overthrew the aristocracy and led the city’s reconstruction. She established the Knights of Favonius to fight against any tyrants, becoming its first Grand Master and Dandelion Knight.
It is said that at the end of her life, she ascended to Celestia at Windrise and took the form of a falcon. After her ascension, she became the Falcon of the West, one of the Four Winds. The spot where she ascended at Windrise is where the massive oak tree—the Symbol of Mondstadt’s Hero—now stands, said to have grown after her ascension.
Common belief is that after Vennessa ascended to Celestia, she became the Falcon of the West. Furthermore, even a vague, cryptic comment from Dainsleif, the only character in-game who mentions the Falcon of the West, suggests that the current Falcon of the West is Vennessa.
The Legend of Vennessa can be found in the Grand Master’s Office in the Knights of Favonius Headquarters or obtained from Dr. Edith at Windrise and Sayid at the Anemo Archon Statue. Friends of Mondstadt, let us revel! Drink to your hearts’ content! To freedom! To the Anemo Archon! To Vennessa, the first Knight to grace this world! Sons and daughters of Mondstadt, may the gift from the Anemo Archon be engraved in your hearts! And let it be known that this gift is not freedom, but just defiance! It transpired in ages past.
A fiery-headed dame confined to a cell, from the southern plains she did hail. Born free but now bound by chains, though restrained by a tyrant her flesh remained. Still her pious soul never ceased to pray—for her people, for Mondstadt, for illusive freedom if she may.
The day came when Barbatos answered her devotion. The Anemo Archon sought her fiery hair and descended to her position. ‘Every being deserves a name,’ the spirit grinned. ‘To weave your fair name into a song I yearn,’ ‘I seek nothing but your friendship in return.’ The girl happily reciprocated, her fears swiftly dissipated. And so, to the battlefield she marched to Barbatos’ singing voice. The demonic dragon fled from her might and the people did rejoice; corpulent aristocrats crawled under tables at such a valiant sight.
And so, the fiery-headed dame won herself prestigious fame. Her heart swelled with appreciation to sing by the Anemo Archon’s side. But no words of gratitude should she utter—Barbatos replied: ‘You first conducted what now transpires in your song.’ ‘You have entrusted me with your friendship and your name.’ ‘To praise your freedom, my songs came.’
Vanessa and her clan were originally from Natlan and were the ‘children’ of the Goddess of War, who was at that time the Pyro Archon. The children of the Lady of Fire were strong and proud people who lived on the slopes of volcanoes far to the west. All of them were blessed with fiery red hair.
While she has never been mentioned or depicted with a Vision, legends claim she ascended to Celestia, and the manga depicts her ascension as part of Venti’s tale. It tells the story of Vennessa, the founder of the Knights of Favonius, in her early years when she met Barbatos, the Anemo Archon, as well as how she defeated …

On the day of Ludi Harpastum, Vennessa went out to buy herbs for her sickly sister, Lind. During this time, she encountered Venti, who had raised the ire of Barca Lawrence, heir of the Lawrence Clan and son of the city’s ruler. Venti fled the scene and hid behind her for protection, forcing Barca to stand down due to her reputation. However, Barca had his father purchase Vennessa and her clan, which resulted in her imprisonment.
Venti visited her in prison the night before her final battle. He offered to break her and her people free, but she refused, stating: ‘We must fight and claim our own freedom. We can not beg for it. We must not kneel for it. Freedom given freely is only a guise for another shackle.’
Despite despairing over the futility of her situation, Vennessa refused to give up. She fought against hilichurls under Ursa’s command and even challenged Ursa itself. Before it could retaliate, Barbatos appeared in angelic form, bolstering Vennessa’s combat abilities and helping her drive Ursa away. With Vennessa’s end of the bargain fulfilled, Barbatos ordered Lord Lawrence to hand over control of the city. This triggered a much larger uprising throughout Mondstadt, with Vennessa as its rallying point.
After successfully overthrowing the aristocracy, Vennessa led the city’s reconstruction and established the Knights of Favonius to fight against those who would try to become tyrants. She was its first Grand Master and Dandelion Knight. The accounts of her life after the rebellion differ, but they all converge at the end of her life.
